Thanks to a generous donation, the Cornell Wind Ensemble will return to Costa Rica in January 2012 for another performing and service tour. The first donated instruments are already trickling in (see our Costa Rica Partnership page for details) and the Wind Ensemble students hope to collect more wind, brass, and percussion instruments to donate to music schools in Costa Rica.
Tour preparations are already underway. “Dr. Cindi” as she is called in Costa Rica, is speaking with Mauricio Araya, General Director of the National Bands of Costa Rica, to organize a joint concert. Another concert is planned for the Teatro Eugene O’Neill, the same venue that hosted Cornell in 2006, 2008, and 2010. Communities and schools visited will include Puntarenas, Montezuma, and Pochote (Nicoya Pennisula) as well as return visits to Desamparados and San Jose.
In 2006, Costa Rican composer Eddie Mora Bermudez composed his “Concerto for Saxophones and Wind Ensemble,” which was a wonderful success. He has again been commissioned to compose another concerto: this time for percussion and wind ensemble! Stay tuned for more updates.
